Standard V: Integrating Technology into the Curriculum and Instruction
Select and use appropriate technology to support content-specific student learning outcomes.

Activity 1: Students will write a letter to the states that border the River (Department of Tourism and Commerce) asking for information. Students compile all the information obtained into a class book.

Added technology: Students will use the information compiled to create a Power Point for the class.

Activity 2: Given a map of North America, students locate the river.

Added technology: Students will download a map of North America and in Photoshop, highlight the river.

Activity 3: Given a dictionary, students identify the difference between a land mile and a nautical mile.

Added technology: Students will use Webster.com to identify the difference between a land mile and a nautical mile.

This task is another I will use in the future. It is very important to expose children to as many different programs as possible. If you don't, who will? By using different styles of teaching and incorporating technology, students will enjoy what they are learning and, ultimately, learn how to use technology to glean information and present it. You never know, the very same students you teach to use PowerPoint, may be the very same student that develops a new, more effective version in the future. I feel as though a child's potential and imagination are endless and as a teacher, I need to do my best to ensure that it never gets put in a box.
